This movie was a breath of fresh air for the catastrophe that has been Phase Five of the MCU. Chris Pratt delivered a pretty stellar performance, with a surprising amount of emotional depth to the oft ridiculous Peter Quill.
The overall narrative of the movie developed the High Evolutionary into a very easily hated character. Chukwudi Iwuji brought crazy to life in his quest to re-capture 89P13 (i.e. Rocket). I didn’t like that Adam Warlock was portrayed as kind of an idiot, but it wasn’t a movie ruining quality in my opinion.
What is most interesting, though, is the new Guardians lineup: Rocket, Groot, Kraglin, Cosmo, Adam Warlock, and Phyla. Specifically the inclusion of Phyla.
Phyla is the daughter of Elysius and Captain Mar-Vell. Elysius was a Titan (the same planet that Thanos was from).
Though I can’t think of a way to connect these particular dots, Phyla eventually becomes the Avatar of Death. The same Death that Thanos killed half the universe for in the OG Infinity comics. Her connection to Titan through her mother could potentially involve Thanos from another part of the multiverse later on in Phase Five or Six.
Even with all the positive things that GotG3 has brought to the table for Phase Five, I’m less than optimistic that Feige and Marvel Studios can keep things headed in this direction. I haven’t watched Secret Invasion yet, but I’ve not heard many good things. And I’m avoiding Loki like the plague until I get through Secret Invasion.
Also, Cosmo is a good dog 🙂
