So in an older post I speculated on Morlun being brought on in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Obviously that didn’t pan out, but that theory of mine isn’t completely dead in the water.
Dakota Johnson was recently cast as Madame Web for an unnamed Sony project. Now, we don’t know specifically which iteration of Madame Web she’ll be portraying, but that doesn’t exactly change my overall Morlun theory. It just changes when he’s introduced.
“Morbius’ director, Daniel Espinosa, has revealed the Spider-Totems are central to Sony’s understanding of the multiverse”. Spider-Totems are beings throughout the multiverse connected by the ‘Web of Life and Destiny’, which is woven by “The Great Weaver.” The Web of Life and Destiny is the source of power for all Spider-People. Madame Web is a blind, precognitive woman who is bound to the Web of Life and Destiny, and “it is through her connection to this multiversal force that she intuits the patterns of past, present, and future. In some stories Madame Web is even able to manipulate the strands of the Web at will, even transporting Spider-Totems across the multiverse to ensure they play their assigned role in what she calls the ‘Great Pattern.'” (Source: Sony’s Spider-Man Universe Spider-Totems Explained) Also, read more about Spider-Totems Here.
I speculate that Spider-Totems are going to play a HUGE role in the Sony-Verse, and bring about the likes of Spider-Gwen, Jessica Drew, Cindy Moon, Miles Morales, Ben Reilly, Ezekiel Sims, etc. But with them comes the rogues gallery of historic Spidey villains. We’ve already got Green Goblin, Electro, Mysterio, Lizard, Sandman, Doc Oc, Vulture, Venom, and Morbius. I think we’ll see Rhino and Scorpion sometime relatively soon, too. However, Morlun travels the multiverse hunting and devouring the life force of Spider-Totems using power he obtained from the Great Weaver. He wrecks Peter Parker on several occasions (even leaving Peter with one eye). He’s like a vampire version of Kraven that only hunts Spider-People connected to the Web of Life and Destiny. He nearly succeeds several times in killing Peter, but ultimately fails for multiple reasons. If you’re curious, read Straczynski’s run on Amazing Spider-Man. You won’t be disappointed.
So now that Morbius is out (I still haven’t seen it), and Madame Web has been cast, what’s to say that Mahershala Ali’s Blade won’t make a cameo to slay some vampires? That leads me into Midnight Sons territory, but that’s another post entirely.
